Motorcycles are the backbone of urban transport in African cities, with the continent's fleet growing from 5 million in 2010 to around 30 million in 2024. For the drivers who depend on them, rising fuel and maintenance costs and a lack of affordable finance squeeze already thin margins.

Greenwheels was founded in 2023 to change that. It leases electric motorbikes to ride-hailing drivers on flexible lease-to-own plans, backed by training, maintenance and battery swapping. Through its exclusive partnership with Uber, it has deployed more than 2,200 bikes and expanded from Kenya into Ghana and Uganda.

Drivers on the platform earn around 2.7 times Kenya's minimum wage, and each electric bike cuts emissions by more than 90% compared with a petrol one.
