Breadfast

Revolutionizing the delivery of household goods

Globally, one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted every year, generating 8–10% of Greenhouse gas emissions and driving avoidable deforestation, water waste, and biodiversity loss.

In Africa, food losses are even higher (up to 50%) due to infrastructure gaps such as limited cold storage and fragmented logistics. Egypt ranks among the top contributors, wasting 73 kg of food per person annually.

The country’s $106 billion grocery market is dominated by informal retailers, which account for 70% of sales but face structural issues resulting in limited variety and inconsistent quality.

Breadfast was founded in 2017 to tackle these challenges. Starting with freshly baked bread delivered to customers’ doors at 5am, the company has grown into a leading retail platform offering over 7,000 products and delivering in under 60 minutes across five cities in Egypt. By controlling a digitised supply chain end-to-end, from sourcing to last-mile delivery, Breadfast has reduced wastage to ~2%, far below industry averages.

This efficiency not only underpins the company’s commercial success and competitive pricing, but also directly advances climate goals. As Breadfast scales, the climate impact of its low-waste model will scale too.

CEO & Co-Founder

“We began with bread and reimagined the entire grocery journey SKU by SKU through a fully vertically integrated supply chain: upstream sourcing, QA, traceability, cold-chain logistics, micro-fulfilment, route optimization, and real-time inventory orchestration. The result is a very sophisticated engine that delivers consistent quality, speed, and value to a massive user base of customers every month.”

Investment Director at Novastar

“Digital commerce penetration in Egypt is currently low at 5%, but rapid urbanization, rising disposable incomes, and increasing digital adoption are driving demand for online grocery delivery services. Egypt's young and digitally engaged population and near-universal 4G/5G coverage support this shift.

Breadfast has built one of the most compelling consumer brands in the region, combining quality with speed and convenience at scale. We are proud to partner with a team that has the vision and capability to lead the digital transformation of grocery shopping while creating lasting social and environmental value.”
