Africa’s Electric 2-Wheeler Revolution
Have we reached a pivotal moment in Africa’s electric 2-Wheeler revolution?

Africa is poised to leapfrog into electric mobility, bypassing the gradual ICE transition seen elsewhere. With two-wheelers (2Ws) as the backbone of transportation, electrification is both an economic and environmental necessity.
2024 marked a tipping point for electric two-wheelers (E2Ws) in Africa, particularly in East Africa, where falling battery costs, innovative financing, and strategic partnerships are accelerating adoption.
Startups like Spiro, Arc Ride, Ampersand, Gogo, and Roam have achieved product-market fit, while expanding battery-swapping and charging infrastructure is easing concerns over range and affordability.
Governments are stepping up with fuel subsidy removals, tax incentives, and ICE bans, reinforcing policy support for electrification. Challenges remain, battery-swapping interoperability, capital intensity and scaling hurdles, but momentum is strong. The shift to LFP batteries and mid-drive motors signals increasing standardization.
As well-capitalized players scale aggressively, the next phase will be defined by collaboration across financing, manufacturing, distribution, and charging infrastructure.
At Novastar, we back bold entrepreneurs driving this transition. Through investment, insights, and strategic partnerships, we aim to empower the ecosystem and position Africa as a leader in the global EV revolution.
